Reflexology
The feet as a mirror of the body

Reflexology can be traced back thousands of years to the cultural centers of Egypt, China and India. The modern version of reflexology is a form of manual therapy in which pressure is applied to specific parts of the body, usually the soles of the feet, for an intended therapeutic effect on other parts of the body. For example, pressure on the big toe is said to have an effect on the brain. And although the practice is medically unproven, many people simply enjoy the relaxation the manual pressure provides.

The basic belief behind reflexology is that certain points on the feet are directly related to other areas in the body. Applying pressure to those specific pressure points on the feet is thought to relieve stress and tension, stimulate deep relaxation, improve circulation, and encourage healing in the corresponding part of the body. Treating the entire foot may have a relaxing effect on the whole body.

Reflexology has been used to encourage relaxation during labor and childbirth, as well as promote relaxation in various other medical situations. For some people, conditions caused or aggravated by stress, such as headaches, have also been associated with positive outcomes from reflexology. Due to a lack of scientific evidence, however, keep in mind that these success reports should be considered anecdotal.

A reflexology session may begin with general relaxation techniques to make you comfortable. Then, the practitioner will apply gentle pressure with his or her fingers and thumbs to the specific reflex zones of the foot. A typical session lasts 20 minutes to one hour.

A holistic approach to healing

Rather than treating a specific set of symptoms, reflexology is said to involve the whole person -- including mind, body and spirit. On the most basic level, reflexology may hinge on your stress level and peace of mind. When you enter a state of deep, tranquil relaxation, your body responds by releasing endorphin (natural painkillers), slowing your thinking and using more oxygen. In turn, this type of deep relaxation may have a positive impact on your health.

The soothing power of touch

If you're intrigued by reflexology, consult your doctor to determine if it may be an appropriate therapy for you to try. Remember, it's essential to consult your doctor for an evaluation and diagnosis first. If you do try reflexology, contact a qualified practitioner -- typically a massage therapist or physical therapist with special training in reflexology -- and continue taking any medications as prescribed.

It's important to keep in mind that reflexology is not meant to replace medical treatment or offer any quick fixes. Rather, reflexologists say it encourages the healing process to begin and can be used as a complement to many types of medical approaches or therapies. To make positive, lasting changes, you must pay attention to your overall health and well-being.
